Love is in the Air

Thanks to WoW.com for the complete rundown on The Fool for Love Achievement. Here’s a condensed version.

Love Is In the Air begins Sunday, running February 7th (3:00 am server time) through February 21st (3:00 am server time) this year. Doing most of the achievements related to the holiday will reward you with the meta Fool for Love, the title “the Love Fool,” and one more notch in the long trek toward What A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been.

Buying Cologne/Perfume and Love Tokens from innkeepers. Use them to interact with city guards and NPCs with hearts over their heads, cologne (to talk to female guards/NPCs) or perfume (to talk to male guards/NPCs). Fork over a Token, and most of the time they will give you a Gift/Pledge of Adoration. If the guard/NPC in doesn’t like you, you’ll get your heart broken. This debuff leaves you unable to talk to another NPC for holiday-related business for an hour, or until another player “cures” you.

Be Mine!

Douse yourself in perfume/cologne, talk to guards/NPCs, and hope a Bag of Candies shows up in their gifts/pledges. When it does, right-click your way through the bag (each gives you ten charges) and hope you get all the different candies for the achievement. You may need to go through multiple Bags before you get all the ones you need.

Dangerous Love (Alliance) or Dangerous Love (Horde)

There’s a rumor floating around that this questline is also going to be changed this year, but in previous years it’s been both fast and fun. For Alliance, this will start with Dangerous Love, a quest offered by Aristan Mottar at the Stormwind fountain; for Horde, this will start with Dangerous Love, a quest offered by Fenstad Argyle on the Trade circle in Undercity (above the bank).

The Alliance and Horde questlines are virtually identical, and most of it will involve your running around Stormwind/Undercity. The final step — The Source Revealed (Alliance) or The Source Revealed (Horde) will take you to Hillsbrad. Locating the NPC needed for this is the only tricky part of the questline, but some kind soul on Wowhead mapped it out below:

Once you’ve located the NPC, the questline ends there. For story buffs hang around afterwards to see a sweet little bit between him and his dearly departed wife.

Fistful of Love

Getting a Handful of Rose Petals is easy enough; 5 of them are rewarded for turning Alliance Gift Collections or Horde Gift Collections, you’ll get one while doing the questline for Dangerous Love (see above), and they also turn up randomly in Gifts/Pledges of Adoration from guards and NPCs.

Flirt With Disaster (Alliance) or Flirt With Disaster (Horde)

You’ll need another Handful of Rose Petals for this one, in addition to some booze and perfume.

  • If you’re Alliance, toss on some Perfume, buy enough alcohol to get “completely smashed,” and stumble your way over to Sraaz, the gnomish pie vendor who paths around the Great Forge in Ironforge.
  • If you’re Horde, toss on some Perfume, and BEFORE you go to Undercity for this achievement, make sure you stop and buy alcohol elsewhere. Curiously enough, there doesn’t seem to be any alcohol available in Undercity; you’ll have to bring some with you, or else fly to Tarren Mill. Jeremiah Payson, the cockroach vendor, is located under the bank steps.

Charming (Alliance) or Charming (Horde)

I’m pretty sure this used to be the achievement known as Heartmender that involved giving 20 Unbestowed Friendship Bracelets to players with broken hearts. I suspect Blizzard decided to overhaul Heartmender because your ability to do it depended entirely on how many players were participating in the holiday, got broken hearts, and were in a convenient place to be “cured.” This had the unfortunate effect of anyone with a broken heart getting chased down by a howling pack of players intent on getting their achievement, with only one among them able to get credit for the cure. Yes, it was fairly annoying.

Now it’s about creating Lovely Charm Bracelets, with the mats being 10 “charms” per bracelet. Unfortunately, we don’t have any information on how to get these charms, but they’re directly involved in two achievements (Charming and Nation of Adoration — see below). Seeing as to how you’ll need 120 charms to complete this achievement (40 of which will be needed to create Lovely Charm Bracelets for Nation of Adoration), my guess is that the charms will be fairly common drops from Gifts/Pledges, or easily available in some other fashion.

I Pitied The Fool

The Love Fool is a random drop from Gifts/Pledges of Adoration, you’ll need 5 in order to get this done, and it’s as simple as dropping a Fool, targeting it, and typing /pity in your chat box.

The locations are as follows:

  • Arathi Basin blacksmith
  • Battle Ring of Gurubashi Arena
  • Culling of Stratholme
  • Naxxramas
  • Wintergrasp

Lonely?

The Romantic Picnic Basket is a random drop from Gifts/Pledges of Adoration, you don’t actually need your own to do this; just sit down next to anyone who’s dropped one in Dalaran, right-click the picnic basket, and then eat your Buttermilk Delight. If you do have your own Picnic Basket, drop it anywhere in Dalaran, and odds are good that someone will happen along to join you over the course of the holiday. Failing that, asking a nearby player usually works.

My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose

Nab a Bouquet of Red Roses or Bouquet of Ebon Roses drop from one among a series of 5-man bosses:

The Bouquet is a 100% drop during the holiday, but it can only go to a single player per run.

Nation of Adoration (Alliance) and Nation of Adoration (Horde)

This is another achievement that looks like it’s been overhauled from last year, with the introduction of daily quests for each city superseding the need to pick up a Gift of Adoration from the three “classic” cities of your faction.

The Rocket’s Pink Glare

Love Rockets are random drops from Gifts/Pledges of Adoration. You should be able to shoot 10 off within 20 seconds very easily.

Shafted!

Easy, easy, easy — as soon as you get the item you need. The Silver Shafted Arrow is a random drop from Gifts/Pledges of Adoration, and you’ll need to get 10 of them. As soon as you do, shoot any player in sight who doesn’t already have a noncombat pet out. Once you’ve got 10, you’re all set.

Sweet Tooth

All of the candies needed for this can be found in the Box of Chocolates you can get from Gifts/Pledges, the Dangerous Love questline, or turning in Horde/Alliance Gift Collections. Stuff yourself with all four (you can combine the Buttermilk Delight pig-out with Lonely?, above) and you’re gold.

Not required for the meta:

There are some achievements related to the Love Is In the Air holiday that you can do just for fun, but aren’t required for the title.

Lovely Luck Is On Your Side

You’re quite likely to get this before the holiday’s over; the Lovely Black Dress is (as far as we’re aware) a 7% drop from Gifts/Pledges of Adoration, and you’ll have many chances at it if you’re doing the meta and talking to guards/NPCs a lot. Please note that, even though the dress can be traded between characters, you will only get an achievement from looting it from a Bind-on-Pickup Gift/Pledge.

Perma-Peddle

You need to get lucky with a Truesilver Shafted Arrow, which is a 1% drop from a Gift/Pledge. This is markedly less common than the Silver Shafted Arrow granting a temporary version of the same Peddlefeet pet. All you can do is talk to guards/NPCs every hour and hope for the best.

Tough Love

This is a brand-new achievement for 2010 and we don’t have a lot of information yet, but apparently we’ll be getting a new holiday-related boss in Shadowfang Keep. This seems like a nice touch for lowbie players, and we’ll get information on this as quickly as we can once the holiday goes live.

Good luck with this years achievements and I’ll try to post updates to the new achievements and any changes from last year.
